Homelessness and Young People: Empowering Change Through Action

In Australia, homelessness is a widespread problem that profoundly impacts both adults and young people. With increasing rates of youth homelessness, many young Australians find themselves facing an uncertain future, struggling with housing instability at a time when they should be building the foundations for their lives. Housing instability can lead to a range of difficulties, including disrupted education and mental health challenges, making it critical that we address this issue from a community level, particularly by engaging the children and teenagers in solutions.

How Housing Instability Affects Young People

Young people experiencing homelessness face a unique set of challenges. A key concern is their ability to access education and employment. Without stable housing, it becomes difficult for young people to attend school regularly, complete their education, or secure work. This instability can create a cycle of disadvantage, making it harder for them to break free and build a secure future.

Mental health is also affected. The stress and anxiety associated with not knowing where you will sleep each night can lead to depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental health issues. Feeling isolated and unsupported is common among homeless youth, and many struggle to find the help they need.

For many young people, homelessness isn’t always as visible as it might seem. They may couch-surf with friends or stay in temporary shelters, but without a safe, consistent home, their sense of security and future prospects are at risk.

Charities Supporting Young People in Crisis

Across Australia, numerous charities are dedicated to supporting young people who find themselves experiencing homelessness. Organisations such as Youth Off The Streets, Father Bob’s Foundation, Bridge It, and Mission Australia provide a range of services which include emergency accommodation, food, case management services, and mental health support to help these young people navigate their immediate needs and work towards stable housing.

Beyond shelter, these charities offer programs aimed at empowering young people. By providing access to education, training, and employment opportunities, they help break the cycle of homelessness and give young people the tools they need to thrive. Moreover, some organisations create safe spaces for young people to express themselves, whether through creative workshops, social activities, or mentoring.

These charities are vital lifelines for homeless youth, but the issue remains too large for these organisations to address alone. This is where the broader community can make a difference—especially young people themselves.

How you can help

There are many ways individuals can help young people experiencing homelessness. Donating your time, treasure and talent can make a huge difference in your community.

At Kids in Philanthropy (KiP), we believe that young people have the power to make a positive impact on the world, including addressing homelessness. Our incursions encourage young Australians to engage with their community, become aware of social issues, and actively contribute to solutions. Through programs like Agents for Change we provide opportunities for students to explore the issue of homelessness, understand its causes and impact, and take action through fundraising and volunteering.

By learning about the lives of those affected by housing instability, young people can develop empathy and a deeper understanding of the social systems that contribute to homelessness. KiP partners with organisations that directly support homeless youth, allowing participants to interact with experts and community leaders who are making a difference in the sector.

KiP’s approach to philanthropy isn’t just about giving money—it’s about building young people’s skills, confidence, and leadership so they can advocate for positive change. Through educational workshops, collaborative problem-solving, and community-driven initiatives, young people can learn how to use their voices and actions to tackle pressing social issues, including homelessness. By engaging young people in understanding homelessness and providing them with the tools to make a difference, we are fostering empathy, leadership, and a commitment to creating a more inclusive society.

Homelessness may seem like a daunting issue, but by coming together, supporting each other, and empowering young people to take action, we can make significant strides toward solving it. At KiP, we believe that every young person can play a role in creating positive change. Together, we can help break the cycle of homelessness and support vulnerable young people in building a brighter, more stable future.
